Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Review

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is the fourth game in The Super Smash series. Smash Ultimate was developed by Bandai Namco Studios and published by Nintendo. Smash Ultimate was officially released worldwide on December 7, 2018. Smash Ultimate brings a lot to the table, bringing every single character from previous Smash bros. titles and adding even more, having more than 70 playable characters, over 100 different stages and well over 1000 spirits to assist you in Smash Ultimate’s campaign World of Light.

Campaign
Super Smash bros. Ultimate has a campaign mode just like its predecessors. In Smash Ultimate you travel across the world saving and unlocking all of the characters. Smash Ultimate introduces new mechanics and ideas into their campaign called spirits. Along the way you unlock spirits, that are characters or items, from games that characters are from or other nintendo games, that provide you advantages throughout the levels of the campaign. I find that the fights in the campaign are very annoying, having multiple of the same enemy all using the exact same move over and over again in many fights. Although the fights are easy, sometimes too easy, the fights are very repetitive and do not vary a lot from one another. The campaign in Super Smash Bros. Brawl for the Wii had a much better campaign. But the main focus of Smash Bros. games never has been the point of the game.

Multiplayer
The main focus of all the Smash Bros. games has always been their multiplayer. Whether you play competitively or just for fun with friends there are many great custom game mode options to play just the way you want to. More serious players might want to turn all items off and only play final destination, while the more relaxed players might love using the items and play with stage hazards on. With many unique characters game modes and stages there is something for everyone. The characters are very evenly balanced in Smash Ultimate, I would go as far to say there are no bad characters it is just personal preference and who matches your playstyle. The combat is better than ever in Smash Ultimate. Unlike other fighting games Smash Ultimate is very easy to jump into, it is much easier to learn the controls needing only two buttons and the joystick. Learning just one character out of the big roster means you pretty much know how to use every character in the game. Of course they all have different play styles which is something much harder to learn but you can instantly learn every characters moves with just a few button commands. In a one versus one situation seeing the new effect that happens when you land a smash attack to KO the final stock of the last player it feels so satisfying and makes your win feel well deserved.

Final Decision
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate truly is the ultimate Smash bros. game. Having every character join in on one massive roster of fighters, and the large amount of stages, the game feels like a combination of all of its predecessors. Smash Ultimate is a very enjoyable game no matter how you want to play it, competitively or just for fun. Smash Ultimate is definitely very deserving of its many fighting game of the year awards. If you haven’t played it yet you need to play it now.
