God of War Review
God of War Review
The newest God of War game is an action-adventure game developed by Santa Monica Studio, published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, and released on April 20th of 2018. God of War is the eighth installment in the God of War series, and is the sequel to God of War III from 2010. In the past God of War games the setting takes place in Greece and are based on Greek mythology. However, the latest installment is based on Norse mythology set in ancient Norway in Midgard. Kratos and Atreus’s story starts with them beginning their journey to the highest peak of all nine realms. Facing many great challenges, obstacles, and stress growing between the father and son God of War received a lot of acclamation and many of awards for its incredible world design, narrative, music, combat system, characters, and graphics.
This new God of War is exactly that, a “new” God of War. Along with a change in the setting we also see a different side of our main character Kratos. We are used to the cold harsh side of Kratos, and we still see that side a lot in the new game, but we also get to see the caring, father side of Kratos also. The more and more Atreus and Kratos go into their adventure the more loving and caring kratos becomes to Atreus. The conflict between Kratos and trying to be a father and Atreus’s Arrogance leads to a great story arch and character development. With a newer combat system and the cutscene transitions are incredibly smooth and looks great, it almost feels like your playing a game and watching a movie at the same time. The entire game is just one single shot, so no loading screens after or before cut scenes. Between all the fighting and cut scenes there are plenty of puzzles for you to solve, using Kratos’s new Leviathon axe, or by commanding Atreus.
The renewed image of God of War was a big success. The character development lead to a great story line. The gameplay was very smooth and immersive. The graphics and visuals of a giant serpent (Jörmungandr) and the snowy mountains were very beautiful. Overall God of War is very deserving of the many Game of the Year Awards that it won. This is a must play game for any gamer and sits very high in my all time favorite games.
